The Shutter Door Antiques, Art, Interiors, and Design-Build has been in business since 1966 and serving the Tidewater Area since 1980.  The Shutter Door Antiques was founded by Virginia W. Smith in Baltimore, Maryland.  In the early years, Virginia and her family had 2 locations in the Baltimore Area and spent many weekends doing antique shows up and down the east coast.  Virginia Beach and the Tidewater Area was a regular stop with shows at Pembroke Mall, Scope, The Chamberlain Hotel, The Dome, and The Pavilion.  Virginia Beach became a more convenient stopping off point in between shows.  Virginia’s husband, Jim, decided to purchase a vacation home on the beach which eventually became a year round home.
Pacific Place Shoppes became the new home of The Shutter Door Antiques.  Virginia’s daughter, Pamella Collenberg, subsequently opened The Shutter Door Interiors in the same location.  In 1990, Virginia’s grandson, Bobby Collenberg, added an art aspect to the business with pre-framed decorative artwork.  Pacific Place became too small for all the new endeavors and The Shutter Door moved to a larger location in the Linkhorn Shoppes.  Shortly after Virginia’s death, the company moved to its current location on Laskin Road.  The current store is open and airy with lots of natural light from all the windows.
