In 2008, Mike Pumphrey and his wife Connie moved their family from Akron, Ohio to Virginia Beach with no jobs, no home, and no concrete plan–just a vision from God to share Jesus with the people of Hampton Roads. In summer 2009, they met in a living room with four others and discussed that vision, and Awaken Church was born.
From a cramped townhouse off Newtown Road, to a movie theater, to a shared space in a traditional church, then back to another theater, Awaken continues to grow in number and in passion while pressing on toward its mission to reach people with the Gospel, train up missionaries for Christ, and love the people of this city.
