The School Board of the City of Virginia Beach, through the Adult Learning Center, has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to adult education. The adult and continuing education program was created during the mid 1960s and was called Adult and Vocational Education. Mr. James Darden was chosen as the first public school director of an Adult Education program in the state of Virginia. Mrs. Bonnie Mizenko followed as Director, and Mr. Paul Palombo is the current Director.
A ribbon cutting ceremony was held on April 4, 1995 celebrating the formal opening of the Adult Learning Center at its present location on Virginia Beach Boulevard. It continues to be a valuable community resource, as the largest adult education program in Hampton Roads and one of the largest in the state of Virginia.
Highly-qualified, dedicated staff members work at the Adult Learning Center offering numerous career and workforce training programs, community education, and ABE/GED® and ESOL classes. Classes are also held at satellite sites: the Advanced Technology Center, Larkspur Middle School, the Renaissance Academy and the Technical and Career Education Center to offer convenient instruction and training to the residents of Hampton Roads. Off-site classes are also offered throughout the community.
Continuing a tradition of forward-thinking and life-long learning, the center’s renovated library provides a modern, student-centered “Learning Commons” where technology, resources, and creativity combine in a “café” atmosphere that encourages collaboration and discussion. The library has over 12,000 titles, 2,000 eBooks, 85 journals and magazines; as well as laptops, iPads and a WIFI network available to those who wish to read, study, converse, and receive tutoring. Staff and students recently formed an Environmental Club to promote activities and awareness of issues that impact the environment. In addition to the successful medical programs offered, additional career training programs will expand to include renewable energy and conservation.
